Movie Marathon - 1

The time of the year has come for me to sit in front of the box late at night to watch a collection of horror movies. I have rented [Read: downloaded from Torrent] 20 horror flicks to keep me occupied on top of my already busy schedule of writing, thinking, plotting, dreaming, house-hunting, cursing the neighbours dogs and sourcing for just a fragment of the C4 to blow them up with!

Since the excessive unnecessary barking starts only after nightfall, I had rearranged my writing schedule to the earlier part of the day (which is not as effective as midnight writing as I get distracted easily during the day) and participating in the movie marathon at night. Last night, I started off with The Slit-Mouthed Woman (Japanese) (written by Naoyuki Yokata and Koji Shiraishi. Directed by Koji Shiraishi).

The story is about an urban legend, a tall woman with a mouth slit from ear-to-ear (well, almost) wearing a surgical mask and a long coat and carries a 2-feet long scissors. She is an angry spirit who will possess innocent victims to kidnap young children. Whether or not the children had been good or bad doesn’t really matter to her. She is just there to kidnap and kill.

There are 2 things that I like about this movie. One of which is the yellowish tinge effect that the film produces. Somehow, it makes the whole setting more eerie (which helps). The other thing I like is the way this mad woman kicks and whacks the children. She pulls them across the floor and slams them against walls. Totally brutal!

That’s about all I like about this movie. Period!

The storyline itself is weak. Ms. Slit goes around kidnapping and killing children and possessing victims who will eventually get killed for no apparent reason. Even the back-story does not support the storyline. Apparently, Ms. Slit was an insane person when she was alive. She abused her children, again for no apparent reason, but maybe due to her insanity. Fine! But does that mean that when she dies, she becomes an insane spirit? Langsung tak masuk akal! There are subplots about other mothers abusing their children too but they fail to contribute to the main plot. Maybe I should be more observant to the underlying message that the subplots carry. If there is one!

RA - Go watch Phobia and Long Khong (or is it Longkang?) The Art of the Devil both (Thai). How's the "stressed" finger?

Shamster - I've watched Long Khong (or Longkang if you so prefer). Hated the gore details. I've also downloaded Phobia (w/o subtitles) so it will have to wait till I master the Thai language! The finger is less "stressed" now. Thanks to the tons of meds u forcefully insisted I take.
